Whittlesea residents can declutter their homes while helping to raise money for bushfire-affected communities.

The Whittlesea Food Collective, which is led by Whittlesea Community Connections, is hosting Whittlesea’s Big Garage Sale next month, with all proceeds being donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and local CFA volunteers.

Whittlesea Community Connections chief executive Alex Haynes said the garage sale was an opportunity for the community to come together to help other communities in need.

“A lot of people started collecting things and then the word came through money should be collected instead. This is a way for people to perhaps sell the things they collected and help that way,” she said.

“We hope it will help people feel connected to the wider community.”

The Whittlesea Food Collective is asking for people to donate “items of high quality” to the garage sale, including old computer, PlayStation or Xbox games; DVDs, CDs or vinyl records; kids toys; camping equipment; art work; exercise equipment; garden tools; good quality or near-new clothes, shoes and handbags; old sports gear; and kitchen items such as baking dishes , bowls and cutlery.

Donations can be dropped off at The Whittlesea Food Collective at building D, Melbourne Polytechnic, corner Cooper Street and Dalton Road, Epping on January 29 and 30 from 2-5pm, February 3 from 2-5pm, February 5 from 9am-noon and 5-7pm and February 7 from 2-7pm. Whittlesea’s Big Garage Sale will be held on Sunday, February 9, 1-4pm.
