Family holds car show for diabetes and MS research

When the going gets tough, the car and bike- loving Curra family gets going.

The family, from Reservoir, and 70 of their nearest and dearest will host their seventh charity car show on October 25 at Bundoora Park to raise money for diabetes and multiple sclerosis research.

Together the group is dubbed Team Bella in honour of the Curras’ youngest daughter Isabella, 15, who was diagnosed with type one juvenile diabetes five years ago.

Her dad Tony Curra was diagnosed with a progressive form of multiple sclerosis a year later.

“Our aim is to raise as much money as it takes to help find a cure for diabetes and new drugs for managing multiple sclerosis,” mum Sophie Curra said.

“It was Bella’s idea to raise funds for charity. We have a large family of car enthusiasts.

The first shows started off small, but [the event] has grown over the years.”

Team Bella has raised about $150,000 for the charities to date. Mrs Curra said a car and bike show, held earlier this year, drew more than 10,000 visitors.

“It’s not just a car and bike show, it’s a great day for the whole family,” she said.

The Team Bella car and bike show will include amusement rides, kids’ pony rides, a children’s animal farm, show bags, food and trade stalls, live music, and trophies and raffle prizes up for grabs.
