Craigieburn Road works move ahead

Works are forging ahead on the Craigieburn Road Upgrade as crews have been preparing to reopen Dorchester Street to traffic.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are a step closer to benefitting from safer, more-reliable travel across this key 6.5-kilometre arterial, with the intersection of Dorchester Street and Craigieburn Road reopening to a temporary roundabout last week which has allowed traffic to move through the area until the signals are operational towards the end of the year.

Opening this intersection as a temporary roundabout will not only provide greater ease of access for locals, but also give the construction team more room to work on crucial drainage and pavement works on the northern side of Craigieburn Road, speeding up completion and reducing lengthy delays for residents.

The project also reached another milestone following a two-week blitz at Bridgewater Road where crews worked with Yarra Valley Water to carry out water works at the intersection, reopening the major thoroughfare last Friday, in time for the second school term to kick off.

This week crews will remove barriers and lay asphalt, opening up the area between Aitken Boulevard and Mickleham Road.

It comes as the project team prepares to reopen new upgraded walking and cycling path on Aitken Bridge, open three lanes to traffic westbound on Craigieburn Road between Aitken Boulevard and Mickleham Road, and open two westbound right turn lanes from Aitken Boulevard to Craigieburn Road.

There will be night closures from Monday, May 6 to mid-May on Craigieburn Road between Mickleham Road and Aitken Boulevard for permanent line marking.

Over the next few months, the crews will be focusing on the Craigieburn Road and Cimberwood Drive intersection. To facilitate this intersection upgrade Cimberwood Drive will be closed at Craigieburn Road from mid-April until mid-2024.

Works will include drainage and pavement works to prepare for installation of new traffic signals, installation of walking and cycling paths and installation of guard rails.

To continue progressing/fast tracking works to be completed along the length of Craigieburn Road, there will be intermittent night closures.

Completing certain works at night time, when traffic volumes are significantly reduced, ensures minimal disruption for locals.
