Updated design released for Craigieburn Road upgrade

A plan to install another six sets of traffic lights on Craigieburn Road is likely to proceed following the release of an updated design for the road’s duplication.

The revised design, which was released by Major Road Projects Victoria on Thursday, proposes the replacement of roundabouts with traffic lights at Mickleham Road, Waterview Boulevard and Hardy Avenue.

New lights will also be added at Balyang Way, Dorchester Street and Cimberwood Drive.

As reported by Star Weekly, Major Road Projects Victoria released its initial design for Craigieburn Road last December. More than 300 residents have since provided feedback on the initial design.

Craigieburn Road is being duplicated as part of the state government’s Northern Roads Upgrade, with work expected to start next year.

Extra lanes will be built in both directions for five and a half kilometres between Mickleham Road and the Hume Highway. Twelve intersections along Craigieburn Road will be upgraded.

Following community consultation, pedestrian-operated lights will be installed at Craigieburn Sports Stadium.

The initial design has been altered to include direct access on to Craigieburn Road from Clovelly Drive and Chinnock Court.

Walking and cycling paths will be built along Craigieburn Road and bus priorities will be added at intersections where land is available.

Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the upgrade would improve safety and reduce congestion on Craigieburn Road.

The road, used by more than 28,000 drivers each day, has been the scene of 17 serious injury crashes and three fatal crashes in the past five years.

“Locals know just how bad traffic can be on Craigieburn Road during peak times – and they’ve helped to shape a better and safer road for their community, with extra lanes and intersection improvements,” Ms Spence said.
