The third generation South Morang resident, and fire volunteer of 70 years, died in February, aged 83.
Last week, councillor Christine Stow moved a notice of motion to have a park in South Morang named after Mr Williamson to honour his contribution to the area.
Mr Williamson joined the Epping CFA in 1945, and later established the South Morang brigade, where he served as captain for 25 years. He was instrumental in the formation of Mernda CFA in 1973, and was highly decorated for his service to the organisation, which awarded him life membership in 1997.
The National Service Medal was also bestowed on him that same year.
His wife Marion (pictured) said the council’s intent to name a park after her husband came as a surprise, and was “a wonderful honour”.
“He was special; he did a lot of work for the community. He started the fire brigade, did a lot of work with the Whittlesea scouts and the Epping Presbyterian Church.”
She did not have a preference for which park should bear his name, but said somewhere near his family home would be ideal. Mr Williamson’s grandfather ran a dairy farm on Williamsons Road where Marymede Catholic College now stands.
Four generations of the Williamson family grew up on the property and attended South Morang Primary School, before Lindsay and Marion moved to Mernda in 1989.
Their eldest son, Ken, is now captain of the Whittlesea CFA. Ken said he was touched by the council’s plan.
