City of Whittlesea council has given the go ahead for a state-of-the-art tennis hub at Huskisson Recreation Reserve in Lalor.
The $9.8 million redevelopment will include upgrading the four existing tennis courts and the addition of two new courts. Construction of a new shared community pavilion to support local sporting clubs.
Furthermore, the Kingsway Drive car park will be expanded, with improvements to pedestrian access to the tennis courts, pavilion and Jacaranda Preschool.
City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said the redevelopment of Huskisson Recreation Reserve would create a safe and inviting space for all.
“With more and more City of Whittlesea residents playing tennis every year, we’re keen to invest in the future of our community’s social, mental and physical wellbeing,” Ms Wilson said.
“We’re working closely with the local sporting clubs to ensure that the transformation of Huskisson Recreation Reserve meets their needs now and into the future. We might even find the next Ash Barty.”
West Lalor Tennis Club President Andrew MacNeill said the upgrades at the reserve would help the 508 member club provide an array of tennis programs.
“The new facility will equip the club to deliver a range of inclusive tennis programs for the local community, including young mothers’ groups, people with disabilities and disadvantaged community members,” Mr MacNeill said.
“It will provide modern and inclusive facilities for the whole community to enjoy.”
Construction on the tennis courts, pavilion and car park is expected to start in 2023/24.
