Council rallies for growth as north booms

As Melbourne’s northern frontier swells with families, workers and industry, Hume council is drawing a bold line under the state budget with a clear message: invest in the north or risk falling behind.

Council has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for infrastructure that enhances livability for its growing population– pressing the state to back critical transport upgrades and community projects.

“The state government has already committed to partnering with the federal government to fund Mickleham and Donnybrook roads,” the council said in a statement.

“We look forward to seeing those funds in the budget.”

But roads are just the beginning.

From Sunbury to Craigieburn, the council has pitched a list of grassroots projects aimed at upgrading parks, sporting facilities and local streets.

Among the budget hopefuls: a renewed synthetic pitch at John Ilhan Memorial Reserve, new oval lighting at John McMahon Recreation Reserve in Sunbury, and play space upgrades across Greenvale, Meadow Heights, and Kalkallo.

The wishlist includes the extensions of the Hume Hockey Centre pavilion and construction of a second pitch– driven by growing demand in Craigieburn’s booming sports scene.

Hume’s wishlist reflects both immediate needs and the future vision of a region shouldering a significant slice of Victoria’s population growth.

“As the capital of Melbourne’s north, we need other levels of government to help us build places for people to come together,” the council said.
