Council push for park plaque

Hume council will advocate for plaque or statute to be installed at Greenvale Reservoir Park to honour the migrant communities who gathered there before it closed.

The park is set to open in late December following years of upgrades.

Councillor Naim Kurt said for many years, the Turkish community would gather at the park for community barbecues.

“Can there be some sort of plaque that recognises that unofficial [Turkish] name… Ford’un Arkası” (The Park behind Ford)?” Cr Kurt said.

“We do have a lack of multicultural names across our municipality.

“There might be a small little statue as well, recognising the workers that work [at Ford].”

Cr Steve Gagen said the Turkish and Ford communities suffered a double blow when the park closed in 2014, followed by the Ford factory two years later.

“It is with great joy that we see… the southern part of the park is opening with improved facilities, an additional 26 hectares of parkland,” he said.

Cr Gagen said something bigger than a plaque would be suitable to commemorate the Turkish community, and Turkish Ford workers.

“Given the culinary interest of the place, I thought perhaps a big kebab,” he said.

Cr John Hadad said that there were more than just Turkish communities who once gathered at the park.

“There were many from middle eastern communities [as well],” he said.

The public will be able to access the park in late December, which includes upgrades to footpaths, carparks, picnic areas, toilet facilities and drinking fountains.
