Whittlesea council has taken a major step towards delivering the next stage of the Whittlesea Public Gardens master-plan, with councillors voting to remove the ‘road’ status from a section of Sarissa Street in Lalor.

The decision paves the way for a 25-lot residential subdivision overlooking the park, aimed at increasing safety, encouraging visitation, and improving pedestrian access.

The Whittlesea Public Gardens Master Plan 2018 outlined the development as a key feature to boost housing in the area and enhance community engagement with the park.

Mayor Aidan McLindon welcomed the progress, highlighting the council’s investment in revitalising the public space.

“Council’s decision to remove the ‘road’ status of this part of Sarissa Street is an important step forward in progressing the Whittlesea Public Gardens master-plan.”

The park has already undergone significant upgrades, including a new playground, skate park, half-court basketball courts, and a climbing wall.

Further improvements are planned, including upgrades to the car park, walking and cycling paths, a dog park, and water features.

The planning permit application for the proposed subdivision will be considered at an upcoming council meeting.

The road discontinuance decision will also be formally recorded in the Victoria Government Gazette and the council’s Register of Public Roads.
