A draft masterplan for Nick Ascenzo Reserve in Thomastown was endorsed to go out for community consultation at a council meeting on Tuesday, May 16.
The draft masterplan will guide the future development of the reserve and includes key recommendations for future improvements that will create a safe and inclusive reserve and encourage people of all ages and abilities to access the park.
A draft concept plan for the Alexander Avenue shopping precinct has also been developed.
As part of the council’s Town Centre Revitalisation program, it is proposed that the adjacent shopping strip will receive a range of improvements, including better access and upgrades to the streetscape aimed at creating an inviting and safe space for people to visit and enjoy.
Chair administrator Lydia Wilson said the draft plans have been developed based on feedback received during the first stage of consultation on the Alexander Avenue precinct and also through the recent Thomastown and Lalor Place Framework.
“Local shopping precincts and open spaces are the heart of local communities and provide residents with places and spaces to connect with each other,” Ms Wilson said.
“Our community, including nearby schools and the local traders, have shared with us what is important to them and what they would like to see in this precinct, and these insights have helped us develop these draft plans.
“We know that increasing safety and accessibility in the area is a priority and the plans look to address these through better lighting, changes to the car parking, the upgrade and location of facilities including the play area, and improving connection and visibility between the shopping precinct and reserve.”
The draft master plan for Nick Ascenzo Reserve also proposes a new seniors exercise park, a multi-purpose court and expanded picnic area with shelter and seating to cater to people of all ages and abilities, while the Alexander Avenue concept plan outlines options to increase outdoor trading and safety along the shopping strip.
“Our vision is that this precinct will become a hub for locals that provides shopping, recreation and casual sporting opportunities, while improving the overall character of the area with better landscaping and facilities,” Ms Wilson said.
Consultation is open from Friday, May 26 to Sunday, June 25 with feedback to be considered in the development of the final plans.
