Council commits to upgrading The Boulevard

Whittlesea council is backing upgrades to the The Boulevard retail precinct in Thomastown, with a vision to boost the local economy.

At the 16 December council meeting, a contractor was appointed for the works which will start in early 2026 and continue for 12 months.

Whittlesea mayor Lawrie Cox said council plans to breathe new life into the shopping precinct.

“It will help to attract new businesses and new clientele to the area,” he said.

The $4.2 million project has been funded partially by council, contributing $1.3 million.

Cr Cox said he thanks the federal government and the Transport Accident Commission for their contributions of $2.8 million and $100,000 respectively.

According to council, the project will deliver wider footpaths and trading areas, pedestrian crossings, additional car spaces, road and drainage reconstructions, landscaping and seats in the precinct.

“The revitalisation program is a key part of the Whittlesea 2040 vision of developing a strong local economy by promoting investment and employment opportunities,” Cr Cox said.

At the council meeting, Cr Aidan McLindon said he welcomed the tender.

“This is exciting… it was time for a bit of a face-lift … the aesthetics are going to be improved over time,” Cr McLindon said.

Cr Christine Stow said rejuvenation is sorely required, even if historical footpaths are torn up.

“The commercial benefit of the upgrades… being close to the railway station… will have a great impact on the community,” Cr Stow said.
