A massive fire at a Coolaroo recycling plant, which is covering surrounding suburbs in thick black smoke, has been brought under control.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at the SKM Recycling Plant about 3.30am.

The MFB said the fire was brought under control about 8.10am, advising that crews would remain on the scene for some time.

More than 130 firefighters, including four aerial units, battled the blaze, using foam to smother the fire.

It is believed the fire started in machinery before spreading throughout 10,000 square metre Maffra Street factory.

About 100 workers were evacuated because of the blaze and toxic smoke.

Ambulance Victoria is advising residents in Campbellfield, Dallas and Coolaroo to stay inside, close all exterior doors, windows and vents and ensure air-conditioning units are turned off.

Ambulances are on standby in the area should residents require urgent assistance.

State health commander Paul Holman said one man in the area had already been treated by paramedics.

He said the man, aged in his 30s, developed breathing problems. He didn’t require hospitalisation.

“If you are experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty, call triple-0,” Mr Holman said.

“If you need medical advice for exposure to smoke, contact your GP or call Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
