Improved safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on Bridge Inn Road is one step closer, with the contract for the upgrade project awarded.

International construction company Laing O’Rourke was awarded the contract, the state government announced on Tuesday.

The project will include; the duplication of 3.5 kilometres of Bridge Inn Road from two lanes to four lanes between Plenty Road and Yan Yean Road, improved access to Mernda Railway Station and Mernda Town Centre, the installation of a new walking and cycling path, the installation of safety barriers, three new signalised intersections, and a pedestrian crossing.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the project outcomes would improve safety and congestion issues for commuters.

“Adding additional lanes in each direction will slash congestion and create safer journeys for the thousands of drivers who rely on Bridge Inn Road every day,” Ms Allan said.

“We’re delivering the projects Victorians need – making it easier and more accessible for locals to get to where they need to go.”

The project is part of a $2.27 billion Suburban Roads Upgrade package, aiming to upgrade suburban roads across the northern and south eastern part of Melbourne.

The federal and state governments are contributing $1.1 billion each for the package.
