Work has started on German supermarket chain Kaufland’s multi-million dollar distribution centre in Mickleham.

Kaufland Australia directors Maximilian Wiedmann and Patrick Bezner turned the sod on the $255 million project late last month.

The company announced in March that it would build its headquarters and distribution centre at the Merrifield Business Park in Mickleham, bringing 600 jobs to the area.

Kaufland is also planning to build one of its first three Australian stores in Epping and is seeking state government planning approval for another store in Coolaroo.

Mr Wiedmann said the distribution centre will be 117,000 square-metres and have 130 loading docks.

Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas has previously described the distribution centre as the largest in the country.

Mr Wiedmann said Vaughan Construction has been appointed to build it.

“Australia is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, and we are excited to grow with it,” he said. “Our distribution centre will be the beating heart of our supply chain and will ensure we provide an uncompromising quality food shop for our customers.”

It is not known when construction of the first three stores will commence, with the Epping store to be built on the former Bunnings site in High Street.

The other stores will be built in Dandenong and Chirnside Park.
