A community vigil will be held at the City of Whittlesea Civic Centre in South Morang tonight as the impact of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria continue to be felt.
Whittlesea council chair administrator Lydia Wilson said the vigil would be held at 7pm on the Terrace Lawns.
“The aftermath of these terrible earthquakes continues to be felt right across our community. In the City of Whittlesea there are more than 3000 people who identify as having Turkish and Syrian background,” Ms Wilson said.
“Our hearts go out to those communities, and the many other people who have felt helpless seeing the imagery and the stories on the news.”
Ms Wilson said council is collaborating with local Turkish and Syrian community leaders in the planning of the vigil.
“We want to show our support for these communities; and let them know we are standing with them in solidarity in their grief,” she said.
“I would invite our community to come along on Friday night to show your support.”
