Climate Plan up for community consultation

Whittlesea council is calling for community feedback to roadmap a more sustainable and climate friendly future for the region.

Council has developed three draft plans: the draft Sustainable Environment Strategy 2022 -2032, Climate Change Plan 2022-2032 and draft Sustainable Environment Action Plan 2022- 2024 in a bid to create a sustainable Whittlesea.

Chair administrator Lydia Wilson said the community had a shared responsibility to help Whittlesea become a resilient, climate-ready city.

Once implemented, the plans will target key issues to support the environment and combat climate change into the future.

The first two years aim to address biodiversity, city forest, green wedge, water, waste, recycling and community empowerment among other climate specific issues.

“It is imperative that we transition to become a net zero emissions community by 2036 and we need to ensure our people, businesses and environment are resilient to our changing climate,” Ms Wilson said.

Council said each of the plans have been carefully crafted to ensure respectful collaboration with traditional land owners.

“These draft plans have been informed by extensive community consultation with residents,

businesses, school children and industry stakeholders, and take into account state, federal and

global plans, priorities and targets,” Ms Wilson said.

Consultation for the plans will be open until Tuesday, October 4.
