Chocolate treats off limits for furry friends

As World Chocolate Day [Thursday, July 7] passes and chocolate consumption remains high during winter, vets are warning dog owners, including those in Hume and Whittlesea, to be wary of how much chocolate is around the house.

Greencross Vets regional clinical director Dr Adam Sternberg said many pet parents assume feeding their dog a small amount of chocolate is okay.

“Pet owners know that chocolate isn’t good for dogs, but many think it’s the same way that chocolate isn’t good for humans,” he said.

“They don’t realise how serious it can be if our canine friends eat even a little bit.

“There are certain foods that are completely safe for humans but toxic for dogs who can become very unwell and in severe cases, be fatal.”

Dr Sternberg said there can be fatal consequences to dogs eating even small quantities of chocolate.

“Theobromine is the toxic substance in chocolate which can cause seizures, heart issues or death,” he said.

“The more bitter the chocolate, the higher the risk.

“Each year we see pets in clinic that have found their parent’s treats.”

Pet owners are advised to search for alternative treats if their dogs are looking for a sweet treat.
