The upgrade of Childs Road through Epping and Mill Park is a step closer, with beams recently installed for a new bridge over Darebin Creek.

Construction crews have finalised a mammoth task that involved lifting seven concrete beams into place to form the base of the bridge.

The beams were delivered from Melton company Westkon Precast.

Now that the base of the bridge is formed, the Childs Road upgrade team will turn its attention to building the new deck and barriers.

The bridge is a key step in taking Childs Road from two to four lanes between Beaumont Crescent and Prince of Wales Avenue.

The road is used by 25,000 vehicles a day, according to Major Road Projects Victoria.

In addition to the new bridge over Darebin Creek, traffic lights will replace the existing roundabout at the Bowman Drive intersection.

A walking and cycling path along Childs Road will also improve connections for local cyclists and pedestrians.

Project director Dipal Sorathia said: “We’re powering ahead with the Childs Road Upgrade – laying seven beams over Darebin Creek and now getting on with completing the bridge so drivers can hit the pavement early next year.

“This will allow us to add that additional lane in each direction, relieving congestion for all road users and ensure a safer quicker journey for everyone.”

The Childs Road Upgrade is on track for completion in 2023.
