Police are investigating an aggravated burglary and assault at a Craigieburn restaurant last month.

An unknown man attended the Craigieburn Road restaurant on a bicycle about 1am on Tuesday, February 23.

Investigators have been told the man approached the front counter of the restaurant and made demands for cash.

When a staff member refused, the man climbed over the counter and started to punch and kick him.

The offender pulled the staff member towards the counter while making demands, but the victim was able to free himself and move away.

The man followed him before returning to the front counter.

He stole cash from the register and fled the premises on his bicycle, travelling north on Dorchester Road.

The staff member, a 24-year-old Bundoora man, was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have released CCTV footage and images of a man who they believe can assist with inquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, about 177cm tall, with short orange hair and a distinctive tattoo on his right forearm.

He was wearing a black hooded jumper with a white logo on the front and back, light-coloured shorts and blue Nike runners.

He was carrying a blue Nike backpack and riding a bicycle with a white seat.

Anyone who recognises the man or with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log into www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
