The Mill Park Basketball Stadium upgrade will be fast tracked following a funding boost from the state government.
Whittlesea council announced that the government would contribute $1 million to the project as part of its Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.
The $2.8 million redevelopment will include new female and family change rooms, seating upgrades, accessible public toilets, a modern kitchen and fit-for-purpose spaces, along with upgrades to heating, cooling, lighting and water use.
Whittlesea panel of administrators chair Lydia Wilson welcomed the funding.
“Redeveloping Mill Park Basketball Stadium was identified in our Netball and Basketball Strategy as essential to meet the growing needs of basketball over the next 20 years,” Ms Wilson said.
“This funding is great news for the Mill Park community and everyone that comes from far and wide to play at this much-loved facility.
“We look forward to seeing the transformation of Mill Park Basketball Stadium into an accessible and sustainable community hub; a place for all to participate and make important social connections that are evident through sport.”
Basketball Victoria chief executive Nick Honey said it was a great investment by the state government.
“The upgrade to Mill Park Stadium will provide the 5000-plus members of the association a more accessible, inclusive and inviting home venue that will better service and represent the needs of the community.”
Mill Park MP Lily D’ Ambrosio said this investment would support the local economy and create jobs.
“We’re making sport and recreation more accessible, welcoming and inclusive for all Victorians by giving communities the facilities they need.”
Construction is expected to start in 2021.
