Police are appealing for information after a car with a child asleep in the back seat was stolen from Craigieburn.

Police said the silver Mitsubishi Outlander was stolen from Hamilton Street about 10pm yesterday.

A three-year-old boy was asleep in a booster chair at the time.

The offender drove the car for about three minutes before abandoning it.

The offender then jumped into a light-coloured hatchback driven by another person.

The duo were last seen driving south on Cimberwood Drive about 10.20pm.

The boy was reunited with his family.

Hume Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for dashcam footage from anyone who was in the area at the time.
