A Canadian national has been charged after detectives from Victoria Police’s VIPER Taskforce uncovered an alleged international drug trafficking operation.
With assistance from Taskforce Icarus, the 32-year-old man was arrested in Tullamarine on Monday, August 18, in relation to the importation of methylamphetamine from Italy.
Police allege the man was the intended recipient of at least three parcels containing more than 1.5 kilograms of the drug.
He has been charged with three counts of importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug and three counts of attempting to possess a marketable quantity of unlawfully imported border-controlled drug. Each offence carries a maximum penalty of 25 years’ imprisonment.
The man was remanded in custody and is due to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 8.
Detective Inspector Anthony Gasparini from the VIPER Taskforce said drug trafficking had devastating consequences for the wider community.
“We have zero tolerance for those bringing harm to our community by importing and trafficking drugs of any type and will continue to work tirelessly to reduce the supply of drugs in Victoria.”
Investigations are ongoing.
Anyone with information about illicit drug activity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an anonymous report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
