Waste metals from a Campbellfield tyre recycler were allowed to run into a stormwater drain causing a pollution hazard for nearby waterways, resulting in a $1975 fine.
The Environmental Protection Authority said the company, ELT Recycling Australia, separate the metal used to strengthen the tyre structure.
After being chipped and shredded, the material was not collected for disposal and some entered the drain.
“Ensuring the health of our waterways is a priority for EPA and ELT should have acted sooner,” said EPA north metro regional manager Chloe Bernett said.
“So, a fine of $1975 is appropriate.”
The EPA said the Northbourne Road business has since worked to improve their management of the issue. This included putting a mesh over the drains and providing increased training to the staff.
