The cause of a fire in Campbellfield early Sunday morning is under investigation.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews were called to the fire at a factory on Sydney Road just before 4.30am.

The building was fully alight by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, with loud explosions waking up nearby residents who called triple-0

More than 60 firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which took nearly five hours to control.

Smoke blanketed the area resulting in the closure of Sydney Road and National Boulevard, Campbellfield.

Firefighters remained on the scene throughout Sunday to monitor the site and extinguish hot spots.

Fire Rescue Victoria fire investigators are expected to be on the scene today as they continue to look into the cause of the fire.
