Bus stop win for Roxburgh Park

The Roxburgh Park community is set to benefit from a long-awaited bus stop upgrade on Somerton Road, with construction now underway to make the site safer and more accessible for all residents.

Public Transport Victoria has closed the bus stop on the corner of Ravenhill Boulevard and Somerton Road to begin essential repair works.

The upgrade will include the installation of a proper footpath, improving accessibility and safety for passengers who have long struggled with the site’s poor condition.

For years, locals have voiced frustration over the uneven gravel surface, lack of shelter, and the need to stand close to fast-moving traffic. In wet weather, the stop became particularly hazardous, with puddles and mud forcing passengers to wait in unsafe spots. Many in the community noted it was especially difficult for older residents, parents with prams, and people with mobility issues.

Northern Metropolitan MP Evan Mulholland pointed out the ongoing issues for those using the bus stop on a frequent basis.

“Local residents have been forced to trudge through mud, puddles and grass to stand on uneven gravel right next to traffic going 70 km/h,” he said.

“Many locals have contacted me about this bus stop being inaccessible for the elderly and disabled. This is unsafe, unpleasant and unacceptable.”

The new works are part of an effort to address accessibility issues across Melbourne’s north, where rapid population growth has increased reliance on public transport. Community members have long called for safer, more reliable infrastructure to support their daily travel.

Once completed, the refurbished stop is expected to provide a safer, more comfortable waiting area, with level access which better accommodates wheelchairs, walking frames, and prams.
