They’re colourful, chirpy and might just be the most underrated pets going around.

The United Budgerigar Society is throwing open the aviary gates this Sunday, April 13, for a community open day exhibition and everyone’s invited.

Running from 11am to 12:30pm at Plenty Hall, 21 Memorial Drive, Plenty, the event promises expert advice from champion breeders, a welcoming atmosphere, and even a free pair of budgies for new members.

Vice president Steven Bradley said the day is all about showing people that keeping budgies isn’t just a backyard pastime– it’s a full-fledged hobby with a national following.

“The hobby is a national one,” Mr Bradley said.

“Every year in May, birds are selected to represent their state, and then go to a national event where you see the best budgies in the country.”

Mr Bradley’s own fascination started in an unlikely place–on holiday in Perth.

“My wife had budgies as a kid, and I’ve always liked birds. One of her girlfriends had some in the backyard, and I was just fascinated. They’re amazing–and such an amazing pet to have.”

Mr Bradley said the open day is a chance for the public to discover a hobby they might not even realise exists.

“Lots of people have budgies in their backyard and don’t know there’s a whole community around it,” Mr Bradley said.

“We’ve got heaps of knowledge in the club and we love sharing it.”

The best part is, the event is free of charge.

“We’re not out to make money,” Mr Bradley stated.

“It’s just a great hobby and a good social event.”
