Broadmeadows is glowing red this week as Hume council honours National Volunteer Week by lighting up the iconic cube at Town Hall Broad-meadows in celebration of the tireless work of local volunteers.
Mayor Jarrod Bell was joined by fellow councillors and community groups at the lighting ceremony to thank those who give their time to help others.
Volunteer week is May 19-25.
“Giving back to the community is personally rewarding in so many ways,” Cr Bell said.
“Knowing you’ve helped another person is a feeling unmatched by other activities.”
This year’s theme, Connecting Communities, celebrates how volunteering creates lasting relationships and inclusive communities.
Among the groups attending were volunteers from the TAC L2P Program and the State Emergency Services (SES)- both marking milestone achievements.
L2P has now clocked more one million hours helping young people learn to drive, while the SES is celebrating 50 years of service.
Councils across Victoria have been invited to light landmarks in red this week as a powerful show of support for volunteers– the everyday heroes helping communities thrive.
Cr Bell, himself a long-time volunteer, reflected on its personal impact.
“All forms of volunteering are close to my heart, Cr Bell said. “I’ve been a scouts member for decades and volunteering in emergency services since I was a teenager.
“A community is much stronger when people know they can count on those around them.”
