At Northern Health, comfort comes not just from medicine, but from the heartfelt touch of a handmade blanket or the quiet joy of a good book.
Two community-powered initiatives– the Care and Comfort Program and Patient Libraries– are transforming hospital stays into experiences of compassion and connection.
Launched in early 2025. The Care and Comfort Program delivers handmade items– from beanies and blankets to sensory toys and baby cardigans– to patients and residents across Northern Health.
More than 500 colourful, comforting pieces have already been gifted, thanks to the generosity of community volunteers like the Epping RSL Poppy Ladies.
“It was wonderful to have a blanket– it was so bright and colourful and helped cheer me up. It was nice to have when you come to the hospital with nothing,” a consumer from Ward 23, Amy Stewart said.
Occupational Therapist Kathryn Visser said the crochet flowers are now used as sensory fidget tools and often go home with patients as part of their recovery.
The Patient Libraries, first piloted in late 2024, now span 28 locations with nearly 1,00 donated titles.
From crime novels to puzzle magazines, they provide patients with escape, entertainment, and a sense of normalcy.
“I didn’t expect a library in the hospital. It was such a nice surprise– something to read helped the time pass and made it feel a little more like home,” one patient said.
As director of library services, Tania Barry summed up, “Something as simple as a book or handmade item can help patients feel more connected, cared for and at ease.”
