Big boost for parks and gardens

New parks, more kindergarten space and safer streets are on the way for Whittlesea, after the council received more than $6 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund.

The council received funding for five projects from the state government’s fund, which is designed to help Interface Councils deliver community facilities.

Whittlesea council received $2.5 million towards stage one of the Quarry Hills Regional Parkland, which will include walking trails, playgrounds and ropes courses.

The council also received $2 million towards the upgrade and rejuvenation of the Whittlesea Public Gardens, and $1.5 million towards the last stage of the Lalor Streetscape upgrade which aims to improve safety, seating and public space in Lalor.

The government also contributed $500,000 towards the expansion of Bundoora’s McLeans Road Kindergarten, and $375,000 towards the revitalisation of the Whittlesea Community Skate Park.

Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the Growing Suburbs Fund helped Interface Councils meet the needs of their growing communities.

Mill Park MP Lily D’Ambrosio said the funding for Quarry Hills Regional Parkland would create a new park for families to explore.
