Alleged car thief caught in Epping

Detectives have charged a man after he was driving an allegedly stolen vehicle in Epping in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police said officers were originally called to Sydney Road in Coburg following reports a silver Toyota Kluger was stolen about 11.45pm on Tuesday.

Police patrolling the area observed the vehicle on Pascoe Vale Road in Meadow Heights about 30 minutes later, police said in a statement.

Police said officers attempted to intercept the vehicle near the intersection of Barry Road and Malmsbury Drive, however the driver allegedly failed to stop and took off at high speed.

The Police Air Wing followed the car, with the driver allegedly driving at 140km/h in an 80km/h zone, police said.

Police said the car was followed to a shopping centre in Epping where the driver allegedly pulled over and attempted to run away.

With assistance from the Dog Squad, a 25-year-old Corio man was arrested without incident, police said.

The man has been charged with failing to stop a vehicle on police request, reckless conduct endangering life, theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, driving in a manner dangerous and driving at a speed dangerous.

He was remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
