Tennis players in Thomastown have a revamped facility to enjoy, with Barry Road Tennis Club unveiling a major court and lighting upgrade.
The $900,000 redevelopment, funded by the Whittlesea Council, included the reconstruction of courts five and six, installation of energy- efficient LED lighting, and upgraded fencing.
A $20,000 contribution from the club also ensured all six courts were resurfaced in the same blue as Melbourne Park’s Australian Open Courts.
Club president Chris Bazos said the improvements have already had an impact, particularly extending evening play.
“The new lighting extends play time and enhances safety, fuelling increased participation,” Mr Bazos said.
“The resurfaced courts offer a smoother, more consistent surface, elevating the overall game quality.“
The club’s mens team competes in a weekly night tennis league, and efforts are underway to form a women’s team next season.
Whittlesea mayor Aidan McLindon said the investment would help grow local tennis.
“The completion of the Barry Road Tennis Club project is just one example of how we’re creating better spaces for the community to enjoy,“ Cr McLindon said.
“The Barry Road Tennis Club is becoming a hub for both recreational and competitive players, giving residents more opportunities to stay active.“
