Work has started on the construction of the largest community centre in Hume – the Merrifield North Multipurpose Centre.
The $12.9 million development will accommodate a variety of services, programs and activities, including maternal and child health services, preschool, playgroups, immunisation services, arts and cultural programs, social support programs and activities for older adults.
Hume mayor Carly Moore said the Merrifield North Multipurpose Centre would provide a vibrant focal point for the development of a well-connected, growing community.
“Merrifield North Multipurpose Centre will provide a space for the Mickleham community to be inspired, engaged and encouraged to grow, connect and share their lives with one another at all stages of their lives,” Cr Moore said.
“Our community centres have a dual purpose in supporting both the community’s early years and family service needs, as well as supporting the communities social recreational and learning needs.”
The centre will also be home to a kindergarten after the council received a $1.5 million state government grant.
The kindergarten is expected to open early next year, with places for 132 children.
The new Merrifield North Multipurpose Centre is expected to be complete by mid-2021.
