Whittlesea’s choristers have been in the limelight of late.

The council’s group of carol singers, aged from five to 94, has been followed around by a troupe of budding young filmmakers, under the direction of producer, filmmaker and composer Andrew Garton.

“It’s a bit of an inside-out project,” he said. “The film will be about a group of kids making a documentary about Whittlesea’s carols choir.”

Garton said the project had been an eye-opener for the teenage filmmakers, all of whom are on the autism spectrum.

Filmmaker Aaron, 14, recently interviewed the choir’s oldest singer Fred, who is some 80 years his senior. “Aaron said it was the first time he’d ever spoken to an ‘old’ person,” Garton said.

“It’s been a multi-dimensional, multicultural and multi-age experience, which is increasingly rare and increasingly required.”

The choir will perform at Carols by Candlelight at Redleap Reserve on December 11, from 7pm. Garton’s documentary will screen early next year, with a date and venue yet to be set.
