Reliable mobile coverage is one step closer for thousands of residents in Whittlesea and Beveridge, thanks to a $3 million commitment from the Liberal Party to tackle long-standing black spots, if elected.
Whittlesea council has welcomed the pre-election pledge, describing it as a critical boost for safety, connectivity, and digital inclusion in the north.
The funding comes after sustained advocacy from council and the community, who have long flagged the dangers of patchy or non-existent mobile coverage– particularly in semi-rural and fast-growing areas.
“Reliable mobile coverage isn’t a luxury– it’s a necessity, especially in emergencies,” Acting mayor Daniela Zinni said.
“This commitment brings hope for better safety, better business and better connection.”
Large parts of the municipality currently struggle with poor signal, putting residents, visitors, and businesses at risk– especially during bush-fires or other emergencies when communication is vital.
The lack of coverage has also hindered economic participation, remote working, and access to essential services.
Cr Zinni said residents had repeatedly voiced frustration over the issue, and the funding offered a meaningful step toward bridging the digital divide.
Council said it will continue to work with all levels of government and network providers to deliver real solutions on the ground.
