The long-awaited duplication of Mickleham Road is a step closer, with $213 million included for the project in Tuesday’s state budget.
The funding will enable the duplication from the road between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard in Greenvale.
The project will build extra lanes, add new traffic lights at the Aitken College intersection, replace the roundabout at Somerton Road and Mickleham Road with a new traffic light intersection, upgrade the Hillview Road and Dellamore Boulevard intersections, and upgrade and build walking and cycling paths.
The 1.6 kilometre road upgrade will help reduce travel times for thousands of drivers who use the road every day.
The budget also included funding for the development of a business case stage two of the Mickleham Road upgrade between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road.
Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the upgrades were all about creating safer and more efficient roads.
“Whether it’s building the North East Link, or upgrading the road at the end of your street – we’re getting it done and creating thousands of jobs along the way,” she said.
“As we recover from the pandemic, we know families want to spend more time with their loved ones, so we’ll keep investing in our roads to make sure every Victorian gets home safer and sooner.”
The budget also included funding to acquire land for new schools in Craigieburn and Kalkallo.
Funding was also set aside for Doreen Primary School and Merriang Special Development School.
