Whittlesea council an ace for Lalor Tennis Club

Lalor Tennis Club members will have two new Rebound Ace courts to play on this month.

Work on two of the club’s six courts is on track to be finished within the next few weeks.

Whittlesea council has fully funded a $2.4 million overhaul of the club after the Abbott government pulled $300,000 which had been approved by the previous government.

In 2013, Shadow infrastructure and transport minister Anthony Albanese said the government would renege on previously approved community infrastructure grants unless councils had already assigned contractors.

Whittlesea council had been given approval for $5.83 million of funding to redevelop the Church Street shopping strip, Woodland Waters sports field and carpark and upgrade Lalor Tennis Club’s facilities but contractors had not been assigned to the tennis club redevelopment.

Resurfacing tennis courts 3, 4, 5 and 6 will go to tender this month and a contract has been awarded for design of the club’s pavilion upgrade. The project is expected to be completed in December.

Head coach Ian Goolagong said the club had a record 350 members on its books.

“It’s a very multicultural club; most of them just want something to do,” he said. “I just ask kids on the street to come in and have a hit.”
