Mernda: Gilson College gets its wish over Acacia College land

A council-owned parcel of land in Mernda earmarked for Acacia College will now be sold to Gilson College.

The 3631-square-metre site at 380 Bridge Inn Road will be sold to Gilson College for $239,265.

The sale was approved at last week’s Whittlesea council meeting.

The public was invited to make submissions on the sale, but none was received.

In 2008, the Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust applied to the council to acquire the land to build a new access road into Acacia College, as well as new classrooms and playground areas.

Independent co-educational Gilson College bought out Acacia College in late 2012 following the school’s collapse.

Despite a lapse of six years, terms of the sale are unchanged from when the land was negotiated with the Uniting Church.

Whittlesea council senior property officer Greg Phippen said in his report “the valuation rate had not changed given no substantial changes had been made to the intended use, and the council did not consider the land essential for road purposes”.

The land was valued for the purposes of constructing a new service road, classrooms and playground areas.

Gilson College principal Mark Vodell was on an overseas camp with students and therefore unavailable for comment.

Settlement will be finalised within two years.
