Doreen: Cannabis crop haul worth $1m seized from Laurimar Estate house

A tip-off from a neighbour led Whittlesea police to an alleged clandestine $1 million cannabis crop haul from a house in Doreen’s Laurimar Estate on Thursday.

A team of about 13 detectives from the Whittlesea Criminal Investigation Unit raided the property just after 7am.

They found 530 cannabis crops growing in every nook and cranny of the single-storey house, including en suites, a recess normally reserved for a fridge, kitchen cupboards and wardrobes.

Detective Senior Constable Daniel Chrystie said from the street the property “looked like a regular home.”

No one was home during the raid and police are still trying to track down the owners.

Detectives found an intricate wiring system inside the house that was used to power the transformers for the light system.

Detective Senior Constable Matthew McKenzie said: “The system is extremely dangerous and hazardous to the public as they are often installed by unqualified people in order to keep costs down.”
