UPDATE: A man has appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court accused of murdering a barman at a Carlton hotel on Sunday night.
Bahij Zeina, 30, of Templestowe, was led into the dock at 12.50pm to be formally charged with murdering Nevio Cecala on January 19.
Mr Cecala, 51, was working at the University Hotel in Lygon Street, Carlton, when he was allegedly stabbed multiple times to the upper body just after 11pm.
Mr Cecala was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he later died.
Prosecutor Luke Exell told the court that Mr Zeina had been charged on Monday with one count of murder.
Mr Exell said a police brief of evidence against Mr Zeina would be compiled by March 31.
The court was told Mr Zeina’s family had real concerns about his mental health issues and asked for him to be assessed.
There was no application for bail and Mr Zeina was remanded by magistrate John Doherty to appear on May 12 for a committal mention.
A shaven-headed Mr Zeina made no comment during the brief filing hearing.
