Ajay Jay has always been fascinated by the past.

Since primary school, he has enjoyed reading about history and the people who lived before him.

His passion runs so true he has been named Victorian champion of the Australian History Competition.

Participants in the competition were required to complete a 55-question test based on the secondary school history curriculum.

Ajay, who is in year 10 at South Morang’s Marymede College, said the test included questions about the Vietnam War, World Wars I and II, the slave trade and immigration.

He said some of the questions were quite challenging, requiring him to recall information he had learnt throughout the year.

Ajay was presented with a specially-minted medallion, which is engraved with his name, for winning the state division. The young history buff said he particularly enjoyed learning about ancient history and events that happened prior to the 16th century.

“So much about the lifestyle of the Romans and Greeks has contributed to how we live now,” he said. “It’s more than we realise.

“I really enjoy learning about the past and how it has helped shape us.”
