A fireworks display and a host of children’s performers are on the cards for Hume council’s Christmas Carols by Candlelight event this Sunday at Craigieburn.

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou is encouraging families to come along, with picnic rugs and candles.

Carols kick-off at 7pm, but for those who want to arrive before dusk, a Christmas market and animal farm will be open from 5pm.

Children’s group The Kazoos, Tubby the Robot, the Howling Huskies, Hume Dancers, Marceau Camille, Aydan Calafiore, The Jingle Bells, Sunbury’s Naturally Cool Big Band and children from Willmott Park Primary School will perform on the night.

The Transport Accident Commission will bring its Be Present road show where people can walk into the giant present, gift-wrap themselves and then have their photos taken for Christmas cards.

TAC senior road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said the cards would remind family and friends that the best gift they can give this Christmas is to ‘be present’.

“We’re at that time of year when people love to enjoy time with their family and friends, and no one deserves to have an empty seat at the table because of a tragedy on the roads,” Ms Cockfield said.

The event is free of charge, and alcohol and drug-free.

Hume Carols by Candlelight at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve on Sunday, December 6, starts at 5pm. For more information, go online www.hume.vic.gov.au/events
