South Morang’s Anders Bengtsson enjoys lending a hand to those in need through his role as a volunteer with Whittlesea SES.
He spoke to Laura Michell.
Where do you live and how long have you lived there?
I currently live in South Morang and have always lived in the city of Whittlesea.
I grew up in Thomastown, bought my first home in Epping, and have lived in South Morang for the last 11 years.
What brought you to the area?
I have always liked the Plenty corridor and being close to farmland and bush, up to and past the township of Whittlesea.
What do you love about your community?
I love to ride my bike anywhere and everywhere, and I really enjoy saying good morning to people as I pass them on bike paths.
The response 98 per cent of the time is a smile and a good morning right back at me.
That’s what makes my day.
How did you first become involved with SES?
I first became involved with the SES when I went along to an information night at our local Whittlesea SES unit in Mernda with my son.
We both loved the idea that we could both do something for the community together.
As it turns out, I have learnt a lot of new skills that have come in handy in my day-to-day job in the process.
How long have you been involved with the SES? And what do you enjoy about it?
I have been involved with the SES for five years.
What I like about it is, not only are the other members all great to work with, it is a very rewarding job … knowing that the people you are helping are always very grateful … even at the most simple jobs that you go to … is what makes it all well and truly worthwhile.
Where can people find out more information about the SES and how to join?
Whittlesea is now recruiting and will be holding an information evening next month. www.ses.vic.gov.au/volunteer/become-a-volunteer
