Legacy helping veterans’ families through life

Legacy gives support to the families of defence force personnel with activities such as camps.

One of Legacy’s mission statements is that it will support families by delicately assisting a spouse and children by offering relief – physically and emotionally – so they can deal with the strain of any immediate crisis.

“Our work can be about the little things that make a big difference,” president of Melbourne Legacy Graeme Plumridge says. “We help families with pension applications and other advocacy support. Practical assistance can also provide immense peace of mind.

“Recently we assisted a partner of an Afghanistan war veteran who was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. The veteran was unable to work and was undergoing treatment. The couple had a 10-month-old baby girl and a three-year-old boy and were struggling to pay their household bills. Legacy stepped in to help with expenses to give them breathing space and a chance to focus on his health.”

For children, Legacy assists by holding camps, giving them valuable time-out.

“Each has a parent who has given their life or their health while serving for our nation in the defence force, and the kids quickly bond together through their shared experiences.”

Thomas Kaye, of Brunswick, agrees and says he’s very thankful for all Legacy has done for him and his family after the death of

his father when he was 14.

“Dad served in the British then the Australian Navy. After his death Legacy stepped in and I’m forever grateful,” says Thomas.

Now 22 and studying for a bachelor degree in surveying at Melbourne University, he says their help has been amazing.

“I’m living in Australia by myself so not only do they help out with university expenses but they’re my friends. That’s why I decided to become a volunteer.”

Thomas says he recently went on his first “big camp” as a leader.

“Other leaders, staff and 50 kids aged 10 to 17 went to Falls Creek. Being a leader allows me to stay involved and offer a firm word if needed.

“Everyone has an interesting history. It’s so amazing to see the kids bond so quickly; they’ve all been through similar experiences and understand one another.

“Legacy is an amazing charity, and Legacy Week is a really good chance for the organisation to raise awareness and funds for all the amazing work they have done and continue to do.”
