CFA plans fuel reduction burns across Whittlesea

Wollert, Epping North, Mernda and South Morang residents should expect to see smoke this Friday as the Country Fire Authority carries out planned burns.

The burns have been scheduled to reduce fuel in local bushland before the weather begins to heat up.

CFA fire fighters plan to burn about 20 hectares on a private property on Bindts Road, Wollert between 1pm and 6pm.

Nearby roads and services will not be affected.

CFA vegetation management officer Stephen Hull said that reducing the amount of certain types of vegetation could significantly decrease the speed and intensity of any fires that may burn through the area in future.

“Planned burns are one of the most effective measures available to us to protect life and property while also benefitting the environment,” he said.

“Many species of plants and animals have come to depend on fire to survive – so there are ecological as well as safety benefits.

“The planned burn will also be a good opportunity for our local fire fighters to gain valuable experience in this area and work alongside side CFA fuel reduction experts,” he said.

Whittlesea council is advising people with asthma, heart or other lung conditions susceptible to the effects of smoke to consider staying indoors, reducing their exercise, taking their medications and following their asthma plan.

If you experience symptoms seek medical advice or contact the Nurse-On-Call on 1300 606 024.
