Every day the Northern Hospital’s emergency department tends to an average of 212 patients. About 60 arrive by ambulance and 40 are children needing emergency treatment.
To ensure the busy department can keep up with the area’s staggering population growth, nearby resident and community activist Bev Carman has helped organise the hospital’s inaugural race day at Kilmore Racing Club.
The whole-day affair on September 12 will bring local businesses, residents and hospital staff together to raise vital funds.
Ms Carman is encouraging people to sponsor the name of a race for $1500, buy a table for 10 guests for $1000 or show up on the day. Tickets cost $100 and include a two-course meal.
“The money we raise will have a really positive impact for patients. We’re hoping the local community will get behind the event,” she said.
According to hospital data, the population of its primary catchment is expected to increase by 64 per cent by 2026.
Hospital board chairman John Molnar encouraged the community to support its local hospital.
“Given this rapid increase, it’s essential we work together with our community to provide the highest level of care that will be better for everyone,” he said.
