It would be ridiculous for Melbourne Airport to be taken out of Hume and placed into the hands of the new, independent Sunbury council.
While there is a geographic case for the airport to be in Sunbury, its business end falls into what will be Hume’s new boundaries.
It’s people in the eastern side of Hume who will be most impacted by the major projects at the airport, including a new east-west runway and new roads. They deserve to be represented by a council that has a direct stake in all their issues.
By all accounts, Hume council and Melbourne Airport have had an excellent working relationship and this should continue.
Whatever happens, I hope the decision is based on common sense and not around political attempts to secure the new seat of Sunbury.
