Bundoora RSL bowlers shone at the Victorian Open during the week but not in pennant at the weekend as the club fell to fourth on the premier table.
Hume and northern-area bowlers dominated a number of divisions at the state Open held at Shepparton Park.
Teenage duo Josh Corless (Bundoora RSL) and Dean O’Neill (MCC) teamed up to win the men’s pairs, beating Moonee Ponds’ father-son duo Chris and Garry Ball.
The teen pair trailed 3-2 early in the final but went on a run to lead 11-2 before closing out with a decisive 15-7 victory.
A Bundoora RSL pair won the women’s pairs, Jody Nevill and Pauline Skinner beating City of Echuca’s Melissa Larcombe and Veronica Kelly.
An extra end was needed to decide the final. The Bundoora RSL pair held their nerve to snare the decisive shot and win 15-14.
In singles, Glenroy’s Jan Hurst went furthest of any Hume-area bowlers as she made the last 16 of the women’s competition.
Colac’s Rebecca McMahon won the division by beating Moama’s Sandra Connolly in the final, while Yarraville-Footscray’s Wayne Roberts won the men’s singles against Mentone’s Dale Jones.
Glenroy came home with a gold medal, though, as Judy Stainton teamed with Moonee Ponds’ Chris Ball to win the mixed pairs.
Stainton and Ball won the final against Ocean Grove’s Joan Tennent and City of Echuca’s Mick Tull 22-9.
Glenroy’s Jan Morton was part of a composite team that won the women’s fours; with her were Melissa Larcombe, Veronica Kelly and Joan Tennent.
In Saturday pennant, Bundoora RSL fell from second to fourth after losing 16-92 to 2-66 against Essendon.
The lopsided loss means Brighton (97) leads premier division from Moonee Ponds (86), Essendon (84) and Bundoora RSL fourth (82), with fifth-placed Melbourne well back on 69. Essendon won three of the four rinks against Bundoora RSL, with Aaron Tomkins’ 36-12 victory against Damon Di Florio doing the damage to blow the Bombers’ overall margin out to 26 shots.
In division 2, section 2, Broadmeadows won 16-105 to 2-64 against Moonee Ponds-2 to keep top spot on the ladder.
In division 2, section 3, Craigieburn lost 15-87 to 3-84 against Heidelberg Golf .
Craigeburn now sits fifth (52 points) with a considerable gap to catch Montmorency-2 (76) for fourth.
