Decision looms on Muslim group’s private Mernda school

WHITTLESEA council will this week make a decision on a Muslim group’s application to open a new private school in Plenty Road, Mernda.

A spokesman for applicant The Great Prophet, Hussan Al-Khirsany, says more than 400 of the group’s supporters will attend the meeting at the council’s Ferres Boulevard, South Morang offices.

The school organisers have been angry their application has been postponed over four council meetings, while the council has cited the complexity of the application as reason for the delay.

The group hopes to open its non-Muslim Mayfield College in June with 68 students, pending a decision at the council meeting on March 20.
