Thomastown poultry plant gets all-clear

THOMASTOWN residents have lost their fight to stop a poultry processing plant opening in their neighbourhood.

The chicken product manufacturers will set up shop in Settlement Road, Thomastown, in what was a home furnishing centre.

While no chickens can be slaughtered or defeathered at the plant, the meat will be processed into kebabs, schnitzels and other products for sale to shops and restaurants.

Nearby residents sent eight objections to the council, expressing concerns about the emission of bad odours, increased traffic, noise and waste. Property prices could be driven down by the premises, which were too close to residential areas, neighbours claimed.

But council said traffic was unlikely to rise, and the ban on chicken killing would minimise impacts of noise, waste and odours on residents.
