As winter approaches, Whittlesea council is urging people to get a flu vaccination.
The council’s manager of health and aged services, Neville Kurth, said influenza was a serious and potentially deadly disease for the elderly or at-risk groups.
“Influenza is typically transmitted through the air by coughs or sneezes and every year it causes illness in the community,” Mr Kurth said.
The vaccine is free to everyone 65 or over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged 15 or over, pregnant women and anyone from six months of age with a medical condition that increases the risk of influenza.
Council runs public immunisation sessions as well as a workplace vaccination service where nurses attend to vaccinate staff.
